How LSE used live practice to build confident speakers, from students to professional services staff

We have worked with the London School of Economics four times since June 2025: a breakout at the Professional Services Staff Conference, a half-day workshop for the Academic Registrar’s Division, and public speaking and resilience workshops for students on LSE Navigate.

The brief

LSE first asked us to run a public speaking breakout at its Professional Services Staff Conference in June 2025. The Academic Registrar’s Division’s Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee then booked a half-day workshop for 12 colleagues.

LSE Navigate supports students who joined LSE through a contextual offer. Its careers team wanted two workshops: one to help students speak up in seminars, interviews and presentations, and one on resilience after rejection.

What we delivered

Every session was live practice. People learned what happens in the brain under pressure, a simple structure for answering on the spot and how to use pace and pauses. Then they practised, first in pairs and then in front of the group, with feedback straight away.

Before the student workshop, most students said structuring what they wanted to say was the hardest part, so we built the session around it. The resilience workshop gave students practical strategies for handling setbacks and staying motivated.

Each programme had a short survey before and after, so we could shape the content and measure the change.

“Thank you for running it in such a welcoming and informal way. It was a very warm atmosphere… It makes for productive learning.”

What people said

From the feedback forms after each session.

“Systematic approach, that you could ‘train’ for it little by little, like a sports-approach.”

“Practical advice, and chance to rehearse strategies in a very supportive space.”

“I was worried we’d be put on the spot, but working in pairs was perfect.”

“Interactive exercises and great presentation.”

“Was amazing and very practical.”

“Really good and fun, very interesting. The practical activities were great for self reflection as well.”
